Polka Dog Bakery in Bostons hip & historic South Park, was co-founded by Robert Van Sickle & Deborah Gregg in 2000. Polka Dog Bakery is the owners tribute to Pearl, their late one-eyed Puerto Rican Boxer. Found as a stray outside San Juan, Pearl came to them as they were cementing their own relationship that had stretched for months across miles and lands. Though they only agreed to keep her one night, when she wiggled her backside through the front door, there was no turning back. They were hooked.
Pearl took her name from the fact that she had only one eye, which gave her the funny habit of moving her head from side to side whenever she would greet you. And if her front end shook with passion, her rear end squirmed with delight. She did a little sort of polka to everyone she met. And she met a lot of people. There was much rejoicing.
So Pearl became the Polka Dog, and danced her way into peoples hearts. Hard living had left her in need of a little extra nurturing, and to spoil her properly, the two of them eventually took to preparing her meals and baking her gourmet treats. They used the finest ingredients they could find, mixed and matched different recipes, and baked a little love in every bite. Pearl was a good taster, a patient palette, and an honest critic, and from that seedling, the Polka Dog Bakery was born.
They still use the finest all natural ingredients, and bake and prepare all our delicacies by hand. The store is their way of honoring her. Their way of keeping alive the spirit and joy Pearl gave so unconditionally to everyone she met. They offer treats to you, for your own four legged diamond in the rough to enjoy. Polka Dog Bakery is a place where everyone is welcome, where magic happens, and where the lights are always on.
